Environmental Archaeology in Ireland<\/em> organised three seminars in the autumn and winter of 2021\/2022. Details about each event, with links to recorded lectures, are listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seminar 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first event took place online on Thursday 19th August<\/strong> 2021 from 7pm to 8.30pm (Dublin time; UTC\/GMT +1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme of the event was “Environmental Archaeology in Ireland: New Perspectives”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We featured short presentations on recent research findings from Dr Daisy Spencer, Environmental Archaeologist at IAC Ltd<\/a> (pollen), Dr David Stone, who recently completed a PhD at UCD School of Archaeology (plant macro-remains) and Dr Steve Davis, Assistant Professor at UCD School of Archaeology<\/a> (insects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daisy Spencer: New insights into prehistoric farming from pollen analysis<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Stone: Archaeobotany in Azerbaijan: Contribution of plant macro-remains analyses to the understanding of agriculture and diet in Late Antique and Islamic period Bardha\u2019a (2nd\u201316th century)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Davis: Archaeological insect analysis in Ireland: Past, Present and Future<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion, chaired by Dr Ellen O Carroll, Research Fellow at UCD School of Archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seminar 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our second seminar took place online on Thursday 21st October <\/strong>2021 from 7pm to 8.15pm (Dublin time; UTC\/GMT +1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We featured short presentations on research findings from Dr Penny Johnston (Department of History, Politics and Philosophy, Manchester Metropolitan University) and Dr Scott Timpany (Archaeology Institute, University of the Highlands and Islands).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentations were followed by a discussion, chaired by Assoc. Prof. Meriel McClatchie (School of Archaeology, University College Dublin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penny Johnston: Plants remains and chronology: preliminary results from two late 4th\/early 3rd millennia sites<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott Timpany: Fire in the Hole: an anthracological investigation of wood-fuel resources used in metalworking furnaces at Culduthel, Invernesshire<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seminar 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our third seminar took place online on Thursday 27th January<\/strong> 2022 from 7pm to 8.30pm (Dublin time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We featured short presentations and discussion about the development of the new zooarchaeology sampling guidelines from TII<\/strong> (download here<\/a>). The presentations were by Dr Fiona Beglane (Lecturer, IT Sligo; chief editor of the new guidelines) and James Eogan (Senior Archaeologist, TII). The discussion was chaired by Mick Monk (retired, formerly Department of Archaeology, University College Cork).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker 1: James Eogan<\/strong>, Transport Infrastructure Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title<\/strong>: TII and Environmental Archaeolo<\/em>gy: Collaboration, Quality and Dissemination<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bio<\/strong>: James Eogan is a Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Senior Archaeologist. As Project Archaeologist he has managed archaeological services contracts on many TII-funded road schemes over the past two decades. He coordinated the preparation of the TII Paleoenvironmental and Zooarchaeological sampling guidelines. In this presentation, he will set out the reasons why TII values the contribution of environmental archaeology and some of the lessons that have been learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker 2: Dr Fiona Beglane<\/strong>, IT Sligo<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title<\/strong>: An Introduction to the Zooarchaeological Sampling Guidelines: Best Practice for the Treatment, Analysis and Curation of Animal Bones from Archaeological Excavations<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bio<\/strong>: Dr Fiona Beglane is a lecturer at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, and a consultant zooarchaeologist. Her research focuses mainly on medieval archaeology, the archaeology of hunting, the use of scientific techniques in archaeology and in community archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
